In the 10th century there was a Palatinate of the Ottonians in Memleben, which was not yet located with certainty. Both the first Saxon king of the East Franconian Empire, Heinrich I, and his son Otto I issued documents there. Both rulers and chiefs died in Memleben. Before 979 or in the year 979, Otto II founded a Benedictine monastery not far from the Palatinate. Its remains characterize the townscape today. Otto II (also known as Otto the Red) was part of the Liudolfinger noble family. He was Holy Roman Emperor from 973 to 983. Insurgent peasants plundered the monastery in 1525. Gradual decline followed. With the Reformation from 1548, the monastery was finally abolished. So far, no structural remains have been found from the old Palatinate. However, there are still some parts of the wall from the monumental church of the 10th century. The construction of a smaller monastery complex began in the 12th century. At the beginning of the 13th century the monastery church was completed. The late Romanesque crypt is something very special. The Imperial Palace is incorporated into the municipality of An der Finne. In addition to the Imperial Palace, other municipalities are Finneland, Lanitz-Hassel-Tal, An der Poststraße, the town of Bad Bibra, the town of Eckartsberga and Finne.
