In the 10th century there was a Palatinate of the Ottonians in Memleben, which has not yet been located with certainty. Both the first Saxon king of the East Franconian Empire, Heinrich I, and his son Otto I issued documents there. Both rulers and chiefs died in Memleben. Not far from the Palatinate, Otto II founded a Benedictine monastery before 979 or in 979. The townscape is characterized by the remains of the monastery. Otto II came from the noble family of the Liudolfinger. He was also called Otto the Red. He was Holy Roman Emperor from 973 to 983. Insurgent peasants plundered the monastery in 1525. Gradual decline followed. With the Reformation from 1548, the monastery was finally abolished. Evidence of the old Palatinate through structural remains has not yet been discovered. However, parts of the wall of the monumental church from the 10th century are still standing. In the 12th century the construction of a new, smaller monastery complex had begun. The monastery church was completed in the first half of the 13th century. The late Romanesque crypt deserves a special mention. The Imperial Palace is the northern part of the municipality of An der Finne. In addition to the Imperial Palace, other communities are An der Poststrasse, the town of Bad Bibra, the town of Eckartsberga, Finne, Finneland and Lanitz-Hassel-Tal.
