In the 10th century there was a Palatinate of the Ottonians in Memleben, which was not yet located with certainty. Both the first Saxon king of the East Franconian Empire, Heinrich I, and his son, Otto I, wrote documents here. Both also died in Memleben. Before or in 979, Otto II founded a Benedictine monastery not far from the Palatinate, the remains of which characterize the townscape today. Otto II (Otto the Red) came from the noble family of the Liudolfinger. From 973 to 983 he was Holy Roman Emperor. Insurgent peasants plundered the monastery in 1525. Gradual decline followed. With the Reformation from 1548, the monastery was finally abolished. There are no structural remains as evidence of the old Palatinate. However, some parts of the wall from the monumental church of the 10th century are still standing. In the 12th century the construction of a new, smaller monastery complex had begun. The monastery church was completed in the first half of the 13th century. The late Romanesque crypt deserves a special mention. The Imperial Palace belongs to the municipality of An der Finne. Other communities are An der Poststrasse, the town of Bad Bibra, the town of Eckartsberga, Finne, Finneland, Lanitz-Hassel-Tal and the Imperial Palace.
