Otto II came from the noble family of the Liudolfinger. He was also called Otto the Red. He was Holy Roman Emperor from 973 to 983. Before 979 or in the year 979 and not far away, Otto II founded a Benedictine monastery. The remains of the monastery characterize the townscape today. In the 12th century the construction of a new, smaller monastery complex had begun. The monastery church was completed in the first half of the 13th century. The late Romanesque crypt deserves a special mention.
